Volunteer Opportunities
A few hours a week sharing your time and talent can make all the difference to someone. We are a nonprofit 501©3 corporation. Our primary purpose is to support the hospital and improve the quality of life in our community.
With nearly 500 dedicated members, the Hospital Volunteers of Venice support the advancement of the entire health system. We accomplish this goal by assisting the professional staff in providing comfort care to patients and their families, by raising funds and by granting scholarships for continuing medical education.
- Annually, our volunteers provide more than 80,000 hours of compassionate support.
- More than 50,000 cars for patients and visitors were parked by a free valet service provided by HVV through a grant.
- Scholarship grants are given to local students working toward degrees in medicine, nursing and related fields. Total giving over the life of the scholarship awards programs is more than $780,000.
- Our fundraising efforts have allowed us to donate more than $8 million to the region in scholarships and grant awards since 1951. Recipients in 2020 include The Loveland Center, Sky Family YMCA, Meals on Wheels, The American Cancer Society and Good Samaritan Prescription and Health Clinic, among others.
- Grants are provided to ShorePoint Health Venice and the Mammo Money fund.
A wide variety of opportunities are available throughout the health system for volunteers ages 14 and up. Our volunteers serve as escorts, patient care assistants, reception assistants, office assistants, couriers, cashiers, Lifeline installers and more.
Our Hospital Volunteers of Venice operate the Elephant’s Trunk Thrift Store, offering gently used items of furniture, art, accessories, clothing and more. Hours of the shop are Monday – Friday, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. and Saturday – Sunday, noon - 4 p.m. Visit us at 595 S. Tamiami Trail in Venice (across the street from ShorePoint Health Venice).
Our volunteers also manage the Korner Gift Shoppe located in the hospital lobby. Hours are Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. and Saturday – Sunday, Noon - 4 p.m.
Prospective volunteers are interviewed for placement, attend an orientation session and receive on-the-job training. The minimum commitment required is four hours per week on an ongoing basis, with seasonal placements available for at least four months.
